Happy Valentine's Day

Best romantic movies ever! Originally posted Valentine's Day 2008 I've been adding to this since. These are my favorite romantic movies and some of the great lines that went with them.

1. Sound of Music (1965) Captain von Trapp: Yes. Well, you can't marry someone when you're in love with someone else... can you?

2. Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) Frank Beardsley: It's giving life that counts. Until you're ready for it, all the rest is just a big fraud. All the crazy haircuts in the world won't keep it turning. Life isn't a love in, it's the dishes and the orthodontist and the shoe repairman and... ground round instead of roast beef. And I'll tell you something else: it isn't going to a bed with a man that proves you're in love with him; it's getting up in the morning and facing the drab, miserable, wonderful everyday world with him that counts.

3. Love Story (1970) Oliver Barrett IV: Love means never having to say you're sorry.

4. Grease (1978) [first lines]
Sandy: I'm going back to Australia; I might never see you again.
Danny: Don't... don't talk that way, Sandy.
Sandy: But it's true! I've just had the best summer of my life, and now I have to go away. It isn't fair.
[Danny starts kissing her]
Sandy: Danny, don't spoil it!
Danny: It's not spoiling it, Sandy, it's only making it better.
Sandy: Danny... is this the end?
Danny: Of course not; it's only the beginning.

5. Somewhere in Time (1980) Elise McKenna: Forgive me. I have never known this feeling. I have lived without it all my life. Is it any wonder, then, I failed to recognise you? You, who brought it to me for the first time. Is there any way that I can tell you how my life has changed? Any way at all to let you know what sweetness you have given me? There is so much to say. I cannot find the words. Except for these: I love you.

6. Sixteen Candles (1984) Jake: Happy birthday, Samantha. Make a wish. Samantha: Well, it already came true.

7. Romancing the Stone (1984) Jack Colton: Yeah, that poor old yellow-tailed guy... developed a fatal case of indigestion. He died right in my arms. Joan Wilder: I can't blame him. If I were to die there's nowhere on earth I'd rather be.

8. Splash (1984) Madison: (after revealing that she is a mermaid) Allen, don't feel guilty. Allen: Guilty? About what? Madison: About not loving me anymore. Allen: Oh, Madison. All the time we were together, you always knew how I was feeling. Can't you tell now?

9. Ladyhawke (1985) Phillipe: "You must save this Hawk" he said, "For she is my life, my last and best reason for living." And then he said, "One day, we will know such happiness as two people dream of, but never do."

10. Moonstruck (1987) Ronny Cammareri: Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and *die*. The storybooks are *bullshit*. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and *get* in my bed!

11. Princess Bride (1987) Westley: This is true love - you think this happens every day?

12. La Bamba (1987) Donna Ludwig: I will never let anyone get in the way of my feelings for you, ever again.

13. Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) Keith: You look good wearing my future.

14. Bull Durham (1988) Crash Davis: Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Annie Savoy: Oh my.

15. When Harry Met Sally (1989) Harry Burns: I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.

16. Say Anything (1989) Lloyd Dobler: What I really want to do with my life - what I want to do for a living - is I want to be with your daughter. I'm good at it.

17. Untamed Heart (1993) Caroline: He doesn't make sense, I don't make sense, together we make sense.

18. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) [at Gareth's funeral] Matthew: As for me, you may ask how I'll remember him, what I thought of him. Unfortunately there I run out of words. Perhaps you will forgive me if I turn from my own feelings to the words of another splendid bugger: W.H. Auden. This is actually what I want to say: "Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone. Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone. Silence the pianos and with muffled drum, Bring out the coffin... let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle, moaning overhead, Scribbling on the sky the message: He is Dead. Put crepe bows 'round the necks of public doves, Let traffic policemen wear black, cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East, my West. My working week and my Sunday rest. My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song, I thought love would last forever: I was wrong. The stars are not wanted now, put out every one. Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun. Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood, For nothing now can ever come to any good."

And, Charles to Carrie: "In the words of David Cassidy, in fact, while he was still with the Partridge family, I think I love you."

19. Forrest Gump (1994) Forrest Gump: You died on a Saturday morning. And I had you placed here under our tree. And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Momma always said dyin' was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. About to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth every day. Teaching him how to play ping-pong. He's really good. We fish a lot. And every night, we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He, uh, wrote a letter, and he says I can't read it. I'm not supposed to, so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.

20. The American President (1995) President Andrew Shepherd: I'm going over to her house. I'm going to stand outside her door until she let's me in, and I'm not leaving 'til I get her back. A. J. MacInerney: How are you going to do that, sir?
President Andrew Shepherd: Well, I haven't worked that out yet, but I'm sure groveling will be involved.

and...
President Andrew Shepherd: You're attracted to me, but the idea of physical intimacy is uncomfortable because you only know me as the President. But it's not always going to be that way, and the reason I know that is there was a moment last night when you were with ME, not the President. And I know what a big step that was for you. So, Sydney, I'm in no rush. Here's my plan. We're going to slow down, and when you're comfortable, that's when it's going to happen. [Sydney emerges from the bathroom wearing nothing but one of his shirts] President Andrew Shepherd: Perhaps I didn't properly explain the fundamentals of the slowdown plan. Sydney Ellen Wade: [feeling the bed] No, you explained it great.

21. Pride and Prejudice (1995 BBC mini-series) When Mr. Bingley proposes, Jane Bennet: Yes. A thousand times yes.

22. Jerry Maguire (1996) Dorothy: I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be. And I love him for the man he almost is. And... Dorothy: Maybe love shouldn't be such hard work.

23. As Good as it Gets (1997)
Melvin: I've got a really great compliment for you, and it's true.
Carol: I'm so afraid you're about to say something awful.
Melvin: Don't be pessimistic, it's not your style. Okay, here I go: Clearly, a mistake. I've got this, what - ailment? My doctor, a shrink that I used to go to all the time, he says that in fifty or sixty percent of the cases, a pill really helps. I *hate* pills, very dangerous thing, pills. Hate. I'm using the word "hate" here, about pills. Hate. My compliment is, that night when you came over and told me that you would never... well, you were there, you know what you said. Well, my compliment to you is, the next morning, I started taking the pills.
Carol: I don't quite get how that's a compliment for me.
Melvin: You make me want to be a better man.
Carol: ...That's maybe the best compliment of my life.
Melvin: Well, maybe I overshot a little, because I was aiming at just enough to keep you from walking out.

24. The Wedding Singer (1998) Robbie: [singing] I wanna make you smile whenever you're sad / Carry you around when your arthritis is bad / All I wanna do is grow old with you. / I'll get your medicine when your tummy aches / build you a fire if the furnace breaks / Oh it could be so nice, growin old with you. / I'll miss you, kiss you, give you my coat when you are cold. / Need you, feed you, I'll even let you hold the remote control. / So let me do the dishes in the kitchen sink / Put you to bed when you've had too much to drink. / Oh I could be the man to grow old with you. / I wanna grow old with you.

25. Notting Hill (1999) Anna Scott: Can I stay for a while? William: You can stay forever.

26. The Other Sister (1999) Daniel McMann: I love you every minute. I love you more than band music and cookie-making.

27. Bridget Jone's Diary (2001)

Mark Darcy: I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences... But the thing is, um, what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much. Just as you are.

Bridget: You once said you liked me just as I am and I just wanted to say likewise. I mean there are stupid things your mum buys you, tonight's another... classic. You're haughty, and you always say the wrong thing in every situation and I seriously believe that you should rethink the length of your sideburns. But, you're a nice man and I like you. If you wanted to pop by some time that might be nice... more than nice.
Mark Darcy: Right, crikey.

28. Bend it Like Beckham (2002) Jess: Why are you doing this to me, Joe? Every time I talk myself out of it, you come around and make it sound so easy.

29. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) Toula Portokalos: Why?... Why do you love me? Ian Miler: Because I came alive when I met you.

30. 50 First Dates (2004) Lucy: "You had plans and a life before you met me and now all you have time for is to make me fall in love with you every day." Henry: "That's not all I do. I gave a penguin a bath today."

31. 50 Eternal Sunshine of the Mind (2004)
Clementine: This is it, Joel. It's going to be gone soon.
Joel: I know.
Clementine: What do we do?
Joel: Enjoy it.

32. Walk the Line (2005) Johnny Cash: You've got me all revved up. Now I've asked you forty different ways and it's time you come up with a fresh answer. June Carter: Please sing. Johnny Cash: I'm asking you to marry me. I love you, June. Now I know I said and done a lotta things, that I hurt you, but I promise, I'll never do that again. I only want to take care of you. I will not leave you like that dutch boy with your finger in the dam. June Carter: [shakes head] Johnny Cash: You're my best friend. Marry me. June Carter: [quietly] All right.

33. The Wedding Date (2005) Nick Mercer: The hardest thing is loving someone and then having the courage to let them love you back.

34. Just Like Heaven (2006) David Abbott: You saved lives. Elizabeth Masterson: Yeah... including my own. I saved my life, for later. I just... I never thought there wouldn't be a later.

35. Stardust (2007) Yvaine: You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate... It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves... You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and... What I'm trying to say, Tristan is... I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I'd know it for myself. My heart... It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it's trying to escape because it doesn't belong to me anymore. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange - no gifts. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.

36. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) Jamal Malik: I knew you'd be watching. Latika: I thought we would meet only in death. Jamal Malik: This is our destiny. Latika: Kiss me.

37. The Time Traveler's Wife (2009) Henry DeTamble: I never wanted to have anything in my life that I couldn't stand losing. But it's too late for that. It's not because you're beautiful and smart. I don't feel alone anymore. Will you marry me?

38. The Princess and the Frog (2009) Prince Naveen: [practicing a marriage proposal with Evangeline] I'm not sure I want to be a prince anymore, cause then we would have to go our separate ways. I don't want that, I want to stay close to you, no matter what. Because... I love you. And, Prince Naveen: I love her. Tiana is my Evangeline... (Author's note: The other day I was outside with my 2 year old daughter and I pointed to the sky and said look there's the moon. She pointed up to the sky too and said look, look mommy jolene. It took me a minute and then I realized she was saying Evangeline. How sweet.)

Cool VFX

A great visual effects project is profiled on CG Society.org:
The 'Huracán' sequence was a long shot of five and a half minutes with seven hardly-discernible camera cuts. It was the first VFX shot of its kind in Argentinean cinematographic history. It was rendered in Air 8 using the Air Stream plugin as the lighting bridge between Massive and Maya. Up to 42,000 agents were rendered in a crowded stadium with a render farm that peaked at 20 workstations as the deadline approached.
...
The VFX crew were more than 20 artists and technicians but the main (in-house) VFX core team were only ten. All of them lead by Rodrigo S. Tomasso (VFX Designer/Supervisor) and Marcelo G. Garcia (VFX Producer). "This team did more than 108 VFX shots including the extended chase sequence of five minutes an a half with a crowded stadium made with Massive Software, Maya, Air Render and Nuke," explains Marcelo, "As VFX supervisor I spent almost eleven months from pre-production until final delivery. The main VFX team spent between seven to nine months."

Vampire and Zombies: Works Every Time

From Cinemablend.com:
I know there's a lot of good to be found in quirky literary revisits like Pride, Prejudice & Zombies or author Seth Grahame-Smith's newest, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. But when the trick is to take an author's familiar prose or a person's life story and throw in supernatural creatures, is it really going to translate that well to the screen? Twice?

Tim Burton is apparently counting on it.
