Best romantic movies ever! Originally posted Valentine's Day 2008 I've been adding to this since. These are my favorite romantic movies and some of the great lines that went with them.

1. Sound of Music (1965) Captain von Trapp: Yes. Well, you can't marry someone when you're in love with someone else... can you?

2. Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) Frank Beardsley: It's giving life that counts. Until you're ready for it, all the rest is just a big fraud. All the crazy haircuts in the world won't keep it turning. Life isn't a love in, it's the dishes and the orthodontist and the shoe repairman and... ground round instead of roast beef. And I'll tell you something else: it isn't going to a bed with a man that proves you're in love with him; it's getting up in the morning and facing the drab, miserable, wonderful everyday world with him that counts.

A great visual effects project is profiled on CG Society.org:

The 'Huracán' sequence was a long shot of five and a half minutes with seven hardly-discernible camera cuts. It was the first VFX shot of its kind in Argentinean cinematographic history. It was rendered in Air 8 using the Air Stream plugin as the lighting bridge between Massive and Maya. Up to 42,000 agents were rendered in a crowded stadium with a render farm that peaked at 20 workstations as the deadline approached.

The VFX crew were more than 20 artists and technicians but the main (in-house) VFX core team were only ten. All of them lead by Rodrigo S. Tomasso (VFX Designer/Supervisor) and Marcelo G. Garcia (VFX Producer). "This team did more than 108 VFX shots including the extended chase sequence of five minutes an a half with a crowded stadium made with Massive Software, Maya, Air Render and Nuke," explains Marcelo, "As VFX supervisor I spent almost eleven months from pre-production until final delivery. The main VFX team spent between seven to nine months."

Vampire and Zombies: Works Every Time

I know there's a lot of good to be found in quirky literary revisits like Pride, Prejudice & Zombies or author Seth Grahame-Smith's newest, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. But when the trick is to take an author's familiar prose or a person's life story and throw in supernatural creatures, is it really going to translate that well to the screen? Twice?

Tim Burton is apparently counting on it.

Another Step Closer to Tronness

How many FX companies does it take to make an Avatar?

SAN FRANCISCO--About a year ago, with James Cameron's science-fiction epic "Avatar" well under way, it became clear that Weta Digital, the visual effects studio doing much of the computer generated imagery, or CGI, on the project, was a bit in over its head.

At that point, the movie, which opened Friday, was about 40 minutes longer than it ended up being, and what was needed to finish the project was another company that could come in and lend a helping hand--and do so at the same, very high level, that Weta was working at.

And that's where Industrial Light & Magic came in, recalled John Knoll, the Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor tasked with parachuting in to help finish what was, more than on most films, the crucial job of crafting the "Avatar" CGI work.

Predators keeps getting better

Got a little casting news from the PREDATORS set in Austin today. We didn't get to see him, but the awesome Laurence Fishburne will be playing the role of Noland. Can't tell you a damn thing about the character, but I think it's safe to say that he's going to kick some serious ass. We'll tell you more the second they lift the embargo. And believe me, I can't wait to spill! In case you're living under a rock, PREDATORS is being produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal. The cast includes Adrian Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Danny Trejo , Derek Mears, Walton Goggins. The script is a reworking of the one Rodriguez wrote in the mid-nineties.

Portman to Star in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Natalie Portman will star in and produce Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a film that is based on the best-selling book written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen. Variety says that Lionsgate will finance and distribute.

Described as an expanded version of the Austen classic, the book tells the timeless story of a woman's quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a deadly virus that turns the undead into vicious
killers.

Portman will play feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, who is distracted from her quest to eradicate the zombie menace by the arrival of the arrogant Mr. Darcy.

Adrien Brody to star in 'Predators'; Topher Grace in negotiations to join him

 Hollywood’s lining up to be hunted!

Adrien Brody is boarding to star in "Robert Rodriguez's Predators," Fox’s reboot of the sci-fi franchise being directed by Nimrod Antal. Rodriguez is producing with Elizabeth Avellan.

Topher Grace is in negotiations to join the action-adventure movie, to which Alice Braga ("I Am Legend"), Mahershalalhashbaz Ali ("The 4400"), Walt Goggins ("The Shield"), Rodriguez mainstay Danny Trejo and UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov have also been cast.

Written by Rodriguez, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, the script follows a group of elite warrior-types who are being hunted by members of a race of merciless alien trackers called Predators.

Brody is a man who ends up inheriting the mantle of leader and is known as a hunter of men. Grace would play an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer.

Braga is the tough female killer. Ali is a man not afraid to die, Goggins is the loose canon of the group and Taktarov is a former Russian special ops agent.

Trejo, already cast, is Cuchillo, a hardened warrior with twin uzis strapped to his back.

Shooting begins next month in Hawaii then moves to moves to Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin. The movie is slated for a July 9, 2010, release. 

Brody was last seen in Dario Argento’s “Giallo” and next voices the character of Rickity in Wes Anderson’s “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Grace will next be seen in New Line's ensemble romantic comedy "Valentine's Day."

Akira Movie Scripted?

Just saw this on Collider.com:

According to my source, screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, guys whose work I like, are about to turn in their version of an “Akira” movie and the reason why the project has been so quiet is they’ve been hard at work trying to get the script right.

For those that aren’t familiar with their work, they wrote the amazing adaptation of “Children of Men” and they’re also credited with “Iron Man” (although a lot of that movie was written on the set). But my point still stands that I like their work and I’m happy they’re taking a crack at it.

And the cyrstal ball says...

New movies based on beloved books. 2009 didn't disappoint with Time Traveler's Wife, Benjamin Button, Marley and Me and Harry Potter. Of course they could have been WAY better but they were as good as I would have hoped for an adaptation. And Flash Forward is coming to TV as part of the Fall lineup.

So here goes for the future. Can't wait...

Ramona and Beezus by Beverly Cleary who is also co-writing the screen play. This was my absolute favorite book as a kid. I read every book Mrs. Cleary wrote, several times. I'm a little concerned about the casting for Romana and Beezus and unknown director Elizabeth Allen, but maybe they'll surprise me. Release date March 19, 2010. Hopefully this will be a great birthday gift. Hmmmm, at almost 2-years-old will Arin be old enough for this? Probably not screen worthy but damn I'm going to try if the commercials look even half way decent.

Water for Elephants. IMDB has this as still in development but with a release date of 2010. This book rocked. Doesn't happen very often that a book has a great pace, great characters and a decent story. And the ending rocks too. Can't wait to see who will be in the movie. Hoping it's screen worth because of the larger than life circus scenes.

Eat, Pray, Love based on the memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert. Great casting. Julia Roberts as Elizabeth. Also has great actors Richard Jenkins, Billy Crudup and maybe James Franco. Director Ryan Murphy. Probably a wait for Netflix.

Lovely Bones
Based on the book by Alice Sebold.
Directed by Peter Jackson who of course did LOTR and King Kong.
About a murdered 14 year old girl who recalls what happened from Heaven, as the incident affects those around her.
Prediction: should be very good with Jackson directing.

Peace Like a River
(Without a director or actors, I'm willing to bet the release date pushes.)
Based on the book by Leif Enger.No director.Billy Bob Thorton may have been cast to play the Dad. A family tries to find their son after he is found guilty of murdering 2 bad guys who had been threatening them.Prediction: could be even better than the book.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Chabon.
Directed by Stephen Daldry who did Billy Elliot and The Hours.
The film takes place in 1930s New York and is about two young cousins who create a comic book superhero named The Escapist, who "roams the globe, performing amazing feats and coming to the aid of those who languish in tyranny's chains!" The boys help usher in the golden age of comics, and through the years, The Escapist encounters adversaries similar to real-life figures.Prediction: will have to work hard to beat the book.

The History of Love
Based on the book by Nicole Krauss.
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón who directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban andY tu mamá también and Children of Men. See The Memory of Running below.
A long-lost book mysteriously reappears and connects an old man searching for his son with a girl seeking a cure for her mother's loneliness.
Prediction: With Cuarón directing the movie could be as great as the book, which was an excellent read.

The Memory of Running
Based on the book by Ron McLarty.
Also directed by Alfonso Cuarón who directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Y tu mamá también and Children of Men. See History of Love above.
Follows an obese Vietnam vet who, still reeling from the death of his parents, finds out his sister has died in Los Angeles. He sets out on a cross-country trip on his bicycle in a bid to reclaim her body.
Prediction: Again with Cuarón directing this could be really good. Casting and screenplay are critical to capture the book's characters. This was also a decent read.

Fahrenheit 451 (must read first!)
Based on the Ray Bradbury novel.
Simply put, 451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns. In this grim look at a fascist future, firemen have taken on a new duty of starting fires as well as putting them out (complete with flame throwers), specifically with the task of burning all books, as way of suppressing independent thought and action in the public. The film's story centers around a young fireman, Guy Montag, who finds himself questioning his job, even as he encounters a beautiful young woman, and learns about an underground of rebels who each memorize the entire contents of a book, so that they can preserve it even without the use of paper.

2010

Harry Potter and the Dealthly Hallows
Based on the very famous books by J.K. Rowling.
The last one to end the series.
Prediction: will be as great if not better than the others; sad to see it all end.

No mention, but these books would make outstanding movies.

Digging to America
By Anne Tyler about 2 couples who meet at the Baltimore airport for the arrival of the babies they adopted from Korea. The 2 couples stay in touch and follow the families as they gather throughout the years as the girls get older. This was a great book.

The Fugitive Game
By Jonathan Littman about Kevin Mitnick the legendary hacker who broke into corporate computer systems and stole source code to satisfy his curiosity never intending harm. After a well-publicized pursuit that made him notorious, the FBI arrested Mitnick in 1995 and today helps companies protect themselves from guys like him.

Flashforward - coming to TV this Fall
By Robert J. Sawyer. What would you do if you got a glimpse of your future and it looked bleak? Try to change things, or accept that the future is unchangeable and make the best of it? A group of physicists accidentally induce a consciousness shift that flashes everyone on Earth forward 21 years, experiencing several minutes of the future. But while everyone is out of their minds, their bodies drop unconscious; then the world reawakens to what happened as a result of those few minutes. Great story that keeps you guessing until the end. One of my favorite books.

Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict

Decent read and would make a good movie. I only hope they don't cast Keira Knightley or Reese Witherspoon.

The New Yorkers

You don't have to like dogs to like this book which would make a really good movie.

1. The Snow Walker. Great cinematography of the Arctic tundra, great acting by Barry Pepper, Annabella Piugattuk and James Cromwell, and great directing by Charles Martin Smith. The scene at the end helps cinch this as a memorable film. I love that they leave this to your imagination. Rather than hear the conversation at the end I love the imagery and what their body language communicates. Many films today let me down because they play it safe. I also love this quote delivered by James Cromwell.

ABC Orders V Pilot!

ABC has given a pilot order to a new take on the 1980s miniseries "V," which was about an alien invasion.

Written by "The 4400" co-creator/executive producer Scott Peters, the new "V" will center on a female Homeland Security agent.

Peters is executive producing the pilot with HDFilms principal Jason Hall.

Flash Forward starts shooting in Feb

ABC filming pilot based on FLASH FORWARD

ABC, the most-watched television network in the United States, begins filming a one-hour TV series pilot based on Rob's novel FLASH FORWARD in Los Angeles on February 21, 2009.

The pilot script was written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) and Brannon Braga (Star Trek, 24), and David is directing. Rob is serving as consultant, and will be writing one of the first-season episodes.

BSG Spawns Caprica show

Caprica is the prequel to SCI FI's hit original series Battlestar Galactica. The series will star: Eric Stoltz, known for his work in the film Milk and the hit TV show Chicago Hope, Esai Morales of Jericho and NYPD Blue, Paula Malcomson of Deadwood and ER and Golden Globe nominee Polly Walker of Cane and Rome fame.

Set 50 years before Battlestar Galactica, Caprica follows two rival families , the Graystones and the Adamas , as they grow, compete, and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies, a society perceptibly similar to our own. The two families will wage war against each other — blending action with corporate conspiracy and sexual politics. While being simultaneously enmeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons.
