Third Narnia Film loses steam

From Cinemablend.com:
The third movie in the Narnia series (and my favorite of C.S. Lewis’s books), Voyage of the Dawn Treader had been in pre-production at Disney, on track for a 2010 release date. Now though, Disney has pulled out. HR reports that Disney will not co-produce and co-finance the next Narnia movie.

Trek Update

From SciFi.com:

J.J. Abrams, director of Star Trek, posted on the movie's Facebook
page that the film should be locked next week, only a few days after
its original release date of Christmas. The movie's release was bumped
to May 8, 2009.

"We're just making final tweaks to the movie--we should be
totally locked next week," Abrams wrote on Dec. 22. "Then we're going
to flash-freeze it so it's totally fresh for you in May. I can't wait
for you to see the movie. The cast is awesome. The action and effects
pushed the stunt team and ILM beyond their limits. I'm so grateful to
this cast and crew--and to all of you for your interest and patience.
We'll continue to update this page with new info and exclusives, so
check back when you think of it. In the meantime, have a happy,
healthy, fun holiday!"

Flashforward to TV

From Robert Sawyer's blog:
The Hollywood Reporter published an article at 10:00 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, September 18, 2008, saying we were close to selling my novel Flashforward and a pilot script based on it written by Brannon Braga and David S. Goyer to ABC. Reuters picked up the story, and now it's everywhere, including SciFi Wire.

Actually, the deal has closed, and it had even before the Hollywood Reporter piece went online. It closed at 5:55 p.m. Pacific time that day, after many days of marathon negotiations between ABC and David's agents at CAA, Brannon's agents at Endeavor, and my agents at Created By. We're going ahead. I've read David and Brannon's pilot script, and it is
magnificent.

Congratulations, Robert!

More BSG

From Scifi.com:
New Battlestar Prequel Coming

SCI FI Channel announced that it will air a new Battlestar Galactica two-hour prequel movie, set to air in 2009 following the conclusion of the series.

Directed by star Edward James Olmos, the as-yet-untitled new film will be set before the events of the original Battlestar miniseries and will focus on Cylons: Number One, known as Cavil (Dean Stockwell), resistance leader Sam T. Anders (Michael Trucco) and Chief Galen Tyrol (Aaron Douglas).

In the beginning, the Cylons had a plan, but it didn't account for one thing: survivors. During the chaotic aftermath of the nuclear destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.

The film will be written by Jane Espenson and will begin shooting in Vancouver, Canada, at the end of the summer. After airing on SCI FI, it will be released on DVD by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

The final 10 episodes of the fourth and last season of Battlestar Galactica will begin airing on SCI FI Channel in 2009.

Heroes' Oka Talks 'Villains'

From Scifi.com:
Masi Oka, one of the stars of NBC's hit SF series Heroes, told SCI FI Wire that the show's third season--subtitled "Villains"--refers not just to superpowered bad guys, but also to the bad guy inside us all.

"I think that you'll see a dark side of everybody, because being a hero or villain is very subjective," Oka said in an interview at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on July 20. "Each human being has the ability to become a hero or a villain. It's the choices that we make every day, and that can be influenced by the things around us. So you'll see the journeys of everybody, you know? ... Will they become heroes? Will they become villains? Even villains can become heroes. It's all relative."
[...]
Heroes returns Sept. 22 with a retrospective clip show at 8 p.m. ET/PT and a two-hour season premiere at 9.

Here we go again...

From movies.msn.com:
Last week, comedic superstars Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell agreed to star in a new Columbia Pictures flick based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic characters Sherlock Holmes and his crime-solving sidekick Watson. Now, Warner Bros.' competing film, a serious take on the great detective, is trying to steal some of Columbia's thunder. According to Variety, Robert Downey Jr. has agreed to make director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" his first project since "Iron Man" became a blockbuster in May.

Trailers running before The Dark Knight

From ComingSoon.net:
With The Dark Knight hitting theaters on July 18, many are wondering which trailers they can expect to be released with such a highly-anticipated movie. ComingSoon.net has now confirmed which trailers Warner Bros. Pictures will be debuting.

There's been much speculation that we'll be seeing the first trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but it looks like Harry Potter fans will have to wait a bit longer for the first footage. Our guess is it will be shown with the studio's Star Wars: The Clone Wars on August 15, but that's not confirmed.

Instead, what you can expect are the first trailers for Warner Bros.' Terminator Salvation (May 22, 2009), which of course also stars Christian Bale, Zack Snyder's graphic novel adaptation Watchmen (Mar. 6, 2009), and the Ridley Scott-directed thriller Body of Lies (Oct. 10), with Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe.

Stay tuned for when these trailers come online!

Remakes

On SciFi.com:
A new teaser trailer has gone live for the upcoming remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and opening Dec. 12, which has been linked through SCI FI Wire's Trailers page.
On HollywoodReporter.com:
MGM has hired Carl Ellsworth to write its Red Dawn remake, and Dan Bradley to direct -- and the studio is talking to Darren Aronofsky ("among others") about helming its RoboCop update.

Hello World

In recognition of our new daughter Arin, here are some of our top parenting-type movies. No matter how many times it comes on tv we stop flipping channels to watch. God help Arin for having such sci-fi geek, computer-graphic, zombie (daddy), chick-flick (mommy) movie-loving parents.

1. Parenthood (1989) Grandma: I always wanted to go again. You know, it was just so interesting to me that a ride could make me so frightened, so scared, so sick, so excited, and so thrilled all together! Some didn't like it. They went on the merry-go-round. That just goes around. Nothing. I like the roller coaster. You get more out of it.

2. She's Having a Baby (1988) Jefferson "Jake" Edward Briggs: And in the end, I realized that I took more than I gave, I was trusted more than I trusted, and I was loved more than I loved. And what I was looking for was not to be found but to be made.

3. Baby Boom (1987) J.C. Wiatt talking to Elizabeth: Now listen, this is my most important moment of my entire career, if you don't pop this bottle into your mouth right this very second, you're going to see yourself on the next train to Duluth!

4. Mr. Mom (1983) [Trying to get Kenny to give up his security blanket] Jack Butler: I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they're great... and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads Ken. That's serious.

5. 3 Men and a Baby (1987) Michael Kellam: How can something so small create so much of something so disgusting? Peter: Beats the shit out of me.

(Good advise) Peter Mitchell: [reading a review of a boxing match in a hushed, storytelling way] The champ caught Smith with a savage left hook... Michael Kellam: What are you reading her? Peter Mitchell: [responding to Michael in same tone] It doesn't matter what I read, it's the tone you use. She doesn't understand the words anyway, now where were we?

6. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) Mrs. Doubtfire: [after being introduced to Natalie] I admire that honesty, Natalie, that's a noble quality. Never lose that, because it often disappears with age, or entering politics.

Farewell

One thing that always inspired me about movies from the beginning was visual effects. It started out with the creation of optical illusions and realistic props and effects. Then it moved to more advanced photography and compositing. Now were in the digital age, where everything is made of pixels.

One person has been there through this whole evolution, and I've loved everything this guy has ever created. Sadly, we have to say farewell... to Stan Winston. I will always be inspired.

From Scifi.com:
F/X Maestro Winston Is Dead

Hollywood special-effects maestro Stan Winston--whose company was best known for creating creatures for the Terminator films, Jurassic Park and this year's Iron Man--died June 15 after a long fight against cancer, the Associated Press reported. He was 62.

The Oscar-winning visual effects artist died at his home surrounded by family after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio, the AP reported.

Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986's Aliens, 1992's Terminator 2: Judgment Day and 1993's Jurassic Park.

Winston is survived by his wife, Karen; a son, daughter, brother and four grandchildren.

Terminator 4, 3 times = T12!!

From Joblo.com:
If you were concerned that Christian Bale's involvement in the new TERMINATOR movie(s) would be minimal, fear not -- the Batsuit-wearing Brit will smash those metal motherf*ckers into junk at least three times, assuming the franchise retains momentum.

Bale plays the adult John Connor in the scorched future of McG's new TERMINATOR, but there was speculation as to whether the offspring of Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn would be a central figure or essentially a "supporting role," with Bale adding genre cred and name value. According to producer Derek Anderson, "He read the script and he loved it, so he's signed on for all three."

The production, now underway, is going to lengths in order to prevent leakage -- apparently the actors involved are only getting script pages for the scenes they're actually in. No further details were given on the plot (which, we can assume, involves the vestiges of mankind fighting cyborgs), or the potential appearance of the guy who made mechanical assassin so popular, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The flick is due in theaters next May.

Dreamworks does GITS

From SciFi.com:
DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell and plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature film, Variety reported.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three video games. The second anime film, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in the United States by DreamWorks in 2004.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been tapped to write the adaptation.

X-Files Trailer @ Iron Man (May 2)

From SciFi.com:
X-Files Trailer Previewed

Chris Carter, who co-wrote and directed the upcoming X-Files sequel film, offered fans a glimpse at a rough cut of the trailer for the movie, which featured the new tagline "Believe Again."

Screened at the William S. Paley Television festival in Hollywood on March 26, the trailer featured a bit of dialogue between Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson):

Mulder: "Scully. I need you on this with me."

Scully: "I know. That's what scares me."

It featured quick cuts of footage of uniformed men searching a snowfield, led by a white-haired man played by Billy Connolly; someone dragging a body; Mulder in a car being hit by another vehicle; a glimpse of cast member Callum Keith Rennie; Scully hitting someone over the head with a blunt object; the discovery of a body buried in ice; and other images, some of which were also previewed at WonderCon in San Francisco last month.

The trailer ends with a voice-over bit of dialogue between Connolly's character and Mulder as viewers see an image of Mulder and Scully climbing out of a helicopter:

Connolly's voice: "Do you believe in these kind of things?"

Mulder's voice: "Let's just say I want to believe."

The finished trailer will debut in movie theaters along with Iron Man on May 2, a Fox spokesman told SCI FI Wire. The second, as-yet-untitled X-Files movie opens July 25. --Patrick Lee, News Editor

BSG Season 4 Coming!

From Zap2It.com:
Ready to say "hello" and then "good-bye" to "Battlestar Galactica"?

The Emmy- and Peabody-winning series will premiere its fourth and final original season on the Sci Fi Channel beginning Friday, April 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. First, however, fans can whet their appetite a week earlier with two back-to-back specials about "BSG."

"Battlestar Galactica: Revisted" will be the first up to bat on Friday, March 28 at 10 p.m. The half-hour special will recap the sci-fi action and Cylon-human drama driving the first three seasons of the show with insightful commentary by executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.

Beginning at 10:30 p.m., "Battlestar Galactica: The Phenomenon" will investigate the show's impact on pop culture. Actor Seth Green, country singer Brad Paisley and "Talk Soup's" Joel McHale are just some of the celebrities who will share their love for the show.

The fourth season opens with the remaining members of the human race still seeking a new place to call home whilst the line that separates human from Cylon rapidly fades. Starbuck's mysterious return from the dead puzzles Galactica's crew, along with her assertions that she can lead them to Earth, where she had visited when she was supposedly deceased. Also this season, four more members of the fleet can't quite reconcile the fact that they've been Cylons the whole time.

The HD Difference

From Gizmodo.com:
Now that New Line has gone exclusively with Blu-ray, it seems inevitable that we'll get the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy on that format in sexy, sexy high-def. But what if you've already invested a few hundred bucks in the full extended edition trilogy? Will it be worth rebuying the movies in Blu-ray. In a word: yes, yes it will. Here are some stills from the DVDs compared to identical stills from the HD transfer. Make sure to click through in the gallery for the biggest size possible, as there's some good desktop material in here. Get excited. Get very excited.

Trek Trailer With Cloverfield

From Scifi.com:

MTV.com reported that the first teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film will be attached to Cloverfield, which Abrams is producing and which hits theaters on Jan. 18.

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves has seen the trailer and told MTV.com that "it's amazing, and it looks pretty incredible."

Reeves added: "I thought 'Well, this does look completely different and new.' But while having all the stuff that will make fans of Star Trek still feel fulfilled."

Reeves, a longtime associate of Abrams from their days on TV's Felicity, added that he has seen some footage from the top-secret Trek movie.

"I've seen little bits of the movie, too, and I feel that way as well," Reeves said. "He's doing an amazing job. It's very exciting. It's not your grandfather's Star Trek, that's for sure." Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.

And the crystal ball says...

Here are future predictions for some amazing books being turned into movies. At this time release dats based on IMDB and other movie/scifi websites.

2008

Blindness (9/19)
Based on the book by José Saramago.
Directed by Fernando Meirelles who did City of God and Constant Gardner.
Mystery illness causes everyone in the world to lose their sight. Starring Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo and Sandra Oh. Cool book, although warning the author has a thing for periods. Can a story about blind people transcend the big screen?

The Secret Life of Bees (10/17)
Based on the book by Sue Monk Kidd.
Lily is a young girl who lives on a peach farm with her abusive father who hires Rosaleen as a housekeeper. When Rosaleen insults some racists in their town, Lily and Rosaleen run away to a town Lily believes her mother once lived. They live with three estranged sisters on a honey farm and Lily learns what it's like to have a real family. Starring Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Hudson.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (11/21)
Based on the very famous books by J.K. Rowling.
Directed by Anand Tucker who directed Shopgirl and Hilary and Jackie. As Harry Potter begins his 6th year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he discovers an old book marked mysteriously "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.
Prediction: like this won't be as f***ing great as the others.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (11/26)
Based on the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Directed by David Fincher who directed Panic Room, Fight Club and The Game.
An odd romance sparks between a woman of 30 and a man who, at 50, begins aging backwards.
Featuring Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt.
Prediction: may be good but they should have done The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greer which was a better read. Also a little bit to similar to The Time Traveler's Wife also coming out (I hope) this year.

Marley and Me (12/25)
Based on the memoir by John Grogan.
A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.
Starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.
Funny and touching book that will make you cry at the end. I hope Hollywood doesn't kill this sweet story.

The Time Traveler's Wife (?)
Based on the book by Audrey Niffenegger.
Directed by Robert Schwentke who directed Flightplan with Jodie Foster.
A man with a time-traveling gene uses his innate abilities to visit his lover at different points in her life. (The release date has already pushed after Brad and Jen divorced who bought the film rights.)
Prediction: near impossible to beat the book and jumping between them as kids and adults will be challenging. But hoping this will be even a quarter as good as the book.

21 (must read first!)
Based on the fact-based book "Bringing Down the House" about six MIT students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings.

Angels and Demons
(Scifi website says this movie has put on hold due to the writer's strike.)
Based on the book by Dan Brown.
Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. Just like The Da Vinci Code.
About world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who is summoned to a Swiss research facility (CERN) to analyze a mysterious symbol seared into the chest of a murdered physicist. He discovers evidence of the unimaginable, the rebirth of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth.

2009

Lovely Bones
Based on the book by Alice Sebold.
Directed by Peter Jackson who of course did LOTR and King Kong.
About a murdered 14 year old girl who recalls what happened from Heaven, as the incident affects those around her.
Prediction: should be very good with Jackson directing.

Peace Like a River
(Without a director or actors, I'm willing to bet the release date pushes.)
Based on the book by Leif Enger. No director.Billy Bob Thorton may have been cast to play the Dad. A family tries to find their son after he is found guilty of murdering 2 bad guys who had been threatening them.Prediction: could be even better than the book.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Michael Chabon.
Directed by Stephen Daldry who did Billy Elliot and The Hours.
The film takes place in 1930s New York and is about two young cousins who create a comic book superhero named The Escapist, who "roams the globe, performing amazing feats and coming to the aid of those who languish in tyranny's chains!" The boys help usher in the golden age of comics, and through the years, The Escapist encounters adversaries similar to real-life figures.Prediction: will have to work hard to beat the book.

The History of Love
Based on the book by Nicole Krauss.
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón who directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban andY tu mamá también and Children of Men. See The Memory of Running below.
A long-lost book mysteriously reappears and connects an old man searching for his son with a girl seeking a cure for her mother's loneliness.
Prediction: With Cuarón directing the movie could be as great as the book, which was an excellent read.

The Memory of Running
Based on the book by Ron McLarty.
Also directed by Alfonso Cuarón who directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Y tu mamá también and Children of Men. See History of Love above.
Follows an obese Vietnam vet who, still reeling from the death of his parents, finds out his sister has died in Los Angeles. He sets out on a cross-country trip on his bicycle in a bid to reclaim her body.
Prediction: Again with Cuarón directing this could be really good. Casting and screenplay are critical to capture the book's characters. This was also a decent read.

Fahrenheit 451 (must read first!)
Based on the Ray Bradbury novel.
Simply put, 451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns. In this grim look at a fascist future, firemen have taken on a new duty of starting fires as well as putting them out (complete with flame throwers), specifically with the task of burning all books, as way of suppressing independent thought and action in the public. The film's story centers around a young fireman, Guy Montag, who finds himself questioning his job, even as he encounters a beautiful young woman, and learns about an underground of rebels who each memorize the entire contents of a book, so that they can preserve it even without the use of paper.

2010

Harry Potter and the Dealthly Hallows
Based on the very famous books by J.K. Rowling.
The last one to end the series.
Prediction: will be as great if not better than the others; sad to see it all end.

???
No mention, but these books would make outstanding movies.

Digging to America
By Anne Tyler about 2 couples who meet at the Baltimore airport for the arrival of the babies they adopted from Korea. The 2 couples stay in touch and follow the families as they gather throughout the years as the girls get older. This was a great book.

The Fugitive Game
By Jonathan Littman about Kevin Mitnick the legendary hacker who broke into corporate computer systems and stole source code to satisfy his curiosity never intending harm. After a well-publicized pursuit that made him notorious, the FBI arrested Mitnick in 1995 and today helps companies protect themselves from guys like him.

Flashforward
By Robert J. Sawyer. What would you do if you got a glimpse of your future and it looked bleak? Try to change things, or accept that the future is unchangeable and make the best of it? A group of physicists accidentally induce a consciousness shift that flashes everyone on Earth forward 21 years, experiencing several minutes of the future. But while everyone is out of their minds, their bodies drop unconscious; then the world reawakens to what happened as a result of those few minutes. Great story that keeps you guessing until the end. One of my favorite books.

Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict
By Laurie Viera Rigler
Decent read and would make a good movie. I only hope they don't cast Keira Knightley or Reese Witherspoon.

The New Yorkers
By Cathleen Schine
You don't have to like dogs to like this book which would make a really good movie.
